Tunnel construction using traditional methods. Mechanized methods: tunnel boring machines Special tunnel constructions TEACHING UNIT 2. SUPPORT AND LINING ELEMENTS. Support elements—bolts and trusses. Support elements—shotcrete. Reinforced concrete lining. Segmental lining. Special support and lining elements. TEACHING UNIT 3. TUNNEL DESIGN (I) Convergence–confinement method. Ground response curves. Stability of the tunnel face. Operating pressure of tunnel boring machines. Design of the support system and its components. Design of concrete lining. Design of segmental lining. TEACHING UNIT 4. TUNNEL DESIGN (II) Tunnel projects. Ground movements and potential damage to structures Monitoring and instrumentation. Special conditions in tunnels. Tunnel design using numerical methods: guidelines and recommendations.
