PRESENTATION

Within the vast realm of the arts and crafts, mold reproduction and ceramic pieces "artesanales" is a field which is of great importance in the field of artisanal glass and ceramics. This course focuses on providing participants with the essential knowledge required to produce molds for the purpose of replicating ceramic pieces from in an artisanal and authentic way.

Mold replication is a a crucial technique that enables artisans create exact replicas of original pieces, which is valuable both from a with a view to preserving the artisanal tradition as well as to meet the market demand for unique ceramic products.

Objectives

  • Apply mold preparation procedures for the reproduction of handcrafted ceramic pieces through manual molding of plastic clay, using the following criteria: quality and safety, and in accordance with the specified requirements.

  • Apply procedures for reproducing parts handcrafted ceramics by using plastic material, based on criteria of quality and safety, in accordance with the specified requirements.

  • Apply mold conditioning processes for the reproduction of handcrafted ceramic pieces made using the slip-casting method.

  • Apply finishing procedures to handcrafted ceramic pieces produced using molds, ensuring quality standards of the finished parts.

  • Apply drying procedures for handcrafted ceramic pieces, ensuring the quality of the finished pieces and complying with the standards of occupational and environmental safety.

TEACHING UNIT 1. PREPARING MOLDS FOR REPRODUCING HANDCRAFTED CERAMIC PIECES USING PLASTIC CLAY MOLDING Description of Molds – Composition of Molds * Parts of the mold * Mold components: master box, fastening elements (rubber bands and straps) Mold release agents for use with plastic clay – General characteristics – Types and uses Preparation of molds for the production of artisanal ceramic pieces – Materials and tools – Mold supply and preparation operations – Storage operations TEACHING UNIT 2. DESCRIPTION AND CONDITIONING OF CERAMIC SLIPS General concepts: – Characteristics – Classification and use Properties: – Plasticity – Moisture content – Coloration Conditioning of ceramic slips in a plastic state for the reproduction of handmade ceramic pieces – Moistening and kneading procedures – Extrusion – Slurry preparation and filter press procedures. Waste: Treatment and Hazards TEACHING UNIT 3. REPRODUCTION OF HANDCRAFTED CERAMIC PIECES USING PLASTIC MASS Making slabs: – Kneading the clay – Smoothing – Trimming the slab Shaping the pieces – Molding the slabs onto the mold components – Assembling the mold components Identifying defects related to shaping in the plastic state – Types of defects: * labor-related * material-related * process-related * method-related – Causes of defects – How to prevent them * Detection methods * Preventive actions TEACHING UNIT 4.
