In the exciting world of the arts and crafts, artisanal blacksmithing holds a special place, as it is a craft that combines technical skills and creativity to shape one-of-a-kind metal pieces. This course focuses on providing the provide participants with the essential knowledge to understand and define the processes involved in creating works of handcrafted ironwork.

Artisanal metalwork encompasses a wide range of techniques and processes, from selecting the metals and preparing the tools to creating designs, the forging process itself, and the final finishing of the pieces. The Participants in this course will gain a deep understanding of each of these aspects, which will allow them to create works unique and authentic wrought-iron pieces.

Objectives

  • Interpret and analyze projects using quality and safety standards, defining the components of handcrafted wrought iron pieces.

  • Determine material supply needs, tools, equipment, energy, and labor based on designs for handcrafted wrought-iron projects, in accordance with quality and safety standards.

  • Apply techniques and procedures for developing plans for the production of handcrafted wrought iron pieces, based on criteria of quality and safety.

  • Apply techniques and procedures for making Quotes for Hand-Forged Metalwork Projects, based on a production plan that incorporates quality standards.

TEACHING UNIT 1. INTERPRETING ARTISANAL IRONWORK PROJECTS. Formal Characteristics of Hand-Forged Metalwork. – Physical properties of metals: density, toughness, malleability, ductility, fusibility, elasticity, expansibility, plasticity, weldability, forgeability, brittleness, and hardness. – Mechanical testing of metals: tensile, compression, and impact testing. – Mechanical treatments: forging, rolling, drawing, and stamping. – Heat treatments: hardening, annealing, and tempering. Functional aspects and constraints of artisanal wrought ironwork. – Organization of artistic space: grid composition, mathematical and organic patterns, sequences, articulations, variations, and fundamental divisions. – Use of metal in the applied arts. Typology and historical styles of handcrafted forged metalwork: bibliographic and iconographic sources. – Types of handcrafted forged metalwork: grilles, ornamentation, furniture, and accessories. – Metalwork in prehistory. – Metalwork in Egypt, Assyria, and Persia. – Development of metalwork in Greece and Rome. – Ironwork on the Iberian Peninsula during antiquity. – Medieval metalwork: ironwork in Visigothic Spain and in Arab Spain. The use of iron among the Mozarabs and in Christian regions (10th and 11th centuries). – Romanesque ironwork. – Gothic ironwork. – Renaissance ironwork: Renaissance ironwork. – Baroque ironwork: Baroque ironwork. – Blacksmithing in the Neoclassical period. – Blacksmithing in the 19th and 20th centuries. Methodology for interpreting projects: factor analysis and decision-making. TEACHING UNIT 2. GRAPHIC TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO THE DESIGN OF HANDCRAFTED WROUGHT IRON WORKS. Graphic representation systems: – Types. – Characteristics. Sketching and draft drawing techniques. Standardized representation systems: Drawing up plans. Computer-aided graphic techniques applied to the creation of graphic material: hardware and software. Manual graphic illustration techniques: techniques and media. Techniques and procedures for creating templates: – Materials. – Media. TEACHING UNIT 3. MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HANDCRAFTED FORGED WORKS. Iron-based materials: physical and structural characteristics. – Steel. – Other iron-based materials. Types of iron-based materials: characteristics and applications in artisanal forging. – Types of steel and their most common applications in a forging workshop. – Other iron-based materials and their applications. Standardized commercial forms of ferrous materials: sheets, sections, tubes, and bars. – Industrial sections and profiles made of iron and special materials. – Their fabrication, use, maintenance, and storage in the workshop. Fuels: characteristics, storage systems, and supply of gases and coal. – Coal. – Gases: oxygen, acetylene, argon, propane, and butane. Electricity: workshop requirements and conditions. TRAINING UNIT 2. DRAFTING THE WORKPIECE MANUFACTURING PLAN AND ITS BUDGET FOR ARTISANAL FORGING PROJECTS TEACHING UNIT 1. TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES FOR PREPARING PRODUCTION PLANS FOR ARTISANAL FORGING PROJECTS. Specific characteristics of artisanal blacksmithing projects: – Identification of materials: metal and industrial profiles. – Selection of the fabrication technique. Criteria for selecting materials, techniques, and procedures: forecasting requirements. Criteria for selecting energy sources and fuels: forecasting and requirements.
