PRESENTATION

This Course on Social and Health Care for Dependent Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease offers specialized training in one of the most important areas of the social and healthcare sector. The Alzheimer's disease is currently the most common cause of dementia in older adults, as it is a serious, degenerative disorder caused by the progressive loss of brain neurons, the cause of which is not yet fully understood.

Throughout the course, students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the social and health care for patients with Alzheimer's disease, developing the practical and interpersonal skills necessary to provide appropriate, professional, and high-quality care.

Objectives

  • Identify the organizational model and the operation of the social service agencies aimed at target groups.

  • Set the participation in the organization of social and health care activities, explaining the collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

  • Bring the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic recommendations most useful in addressing the dementias, based on the best available scientific evidence.

  • Promote the coordination and development of specialized medical services for Alzheimer's disease, further strengthening the social and health services.

  • Apply techniques and care appropriate for patients with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

  • Learn about Nutrition and Dietary Techniques for Older Adults.

  • Gain knowledge about the Food Preservation and Handling, avoiding infections and related conditions.

  • Recognizing situations of abuse of patients with dementia and cognitive impairment.

  • Get training in hygiene and personal grooming techniques.

  • Learn about the Major Diseases Associated with Old Age.

  • Apply support techniques and strategies in performing activities of daily living.

  • Identify and select communication strategies that promote the social relationships among dependent individuals, using alternative communication resources and systems whenever necessary.
