Another notable example is Rosalind Franklin, whose research was crucial to understanding the structure of DNA.

Influential Women in STEM Today

The presence of women in the technology and science sectors is increasingly marked by international role models who are leading advancements in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, research, and space exploration. Highlighting these figures helps create new role models and encourage interest in scientific careers.

Among the most prominent names are Fei-Fei Li, a leader in artificial intelligence; Sara García Alonso, selected by the European Space Agency; or Jennifer Doudna, recognized for its advances in gene editing.

These examples show how women are participating in and leading increasingly specialized and strategic STEM fields.

Why Don't Women Pursue STEM Majors?

The low participation rate among women is not due to a single cause. It is usually the result of a a combination of educational, cultural, and social factors.

Sociocultural Factors and Gender Stereotypes

Certain stereotypes continue to associate some professions with masculine or feminine roles. Although this perception has changed in recent decades, it can still influence academic decisions from an early age.

Technology-related fields and certain engineering disciplines continue to be perceived in some contexts as traditionally male-dominated sectors.

Lack of role models and examples to follow

The lack of visible role models also affects educational decisions.

When girls and teenage girls have few role models in engineering or technology in their immediate circles, their interest in these professions declines. For this reason, many programs for women in technology incorporate mentoring and activities with professionals in the field.

Impostor Syndrome and Self-Perception

Another important factor is the perception of one’s own abilities. Impostor syndrome can lead to insecurity and cause some female students to question their preparedness, even when they achieve results similar to or better than those of their peers.

This phenomenon depends not only on individual confidence, but also on the educational and social environment.

Women's Representation in STEM Fields

The representation of women varies significantly by sector and region.

Global and European Data

A at the international level, Women account for approximately one-third of students in certain STEM fields, although there are significant differences depending on the discipline.

In Europe, fields related to health sciences show more balanced percentages, while technology and engineering continue to have a lower proportion of women.

In Spain, the percentage of women in engineering in Spain remains lower than in other university disciplines.

Differences by sector (technology, engineering, science)

Not all STEM professions face the same situation regarding female participation, as there are significant differences depending on the field of specialization:

Technology (computer science and programming): It is one of the sectors with the lowest representation of women. Fields such as software development, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence remain heavily male-dominated, reflecting gaps in both education and professional role models.

Engineering: Significant differences are also observed within this field. Industrial, mechanical, and electrical engineering have lower percentages of women, while other branches, such as biomedical and environmental engineering, show a somewhat higher proportion of women, although it remains unequal.

Science (biosciences and health sciences): It is the sector with the greatest gender balance.
